Sustainable Agriculture
The economy of the northern part of Bangladesh is dependent on agriculture. Most of the farmers in this agricultural area are illiterate or poorly educated. Farmers in the area are using excessive amounts of chemical fertilizers on their land in the hope of higher yields. As a result, the nutrient balance of their cultivated land is being disturbed and the acidity of the land is increasing. As a result, the cultivable land is becoming infertile day by day. On the other hand, due to low use of organic manure in the land, the organic matter content of the land has come down below 1%. As a result, the water holding capacity of the land has decreased more than before. Moreover, the widespread use of chemical pesticides to control crop insects has made them resistant. Harmful effects of chemical pesticides have increased the disease in the human body. The use of hybrid seeds in agriculture has recently increased the dependence on others. In hybrid cultivation, the amount of loss is more than the profit. Indigenous seeds are getting lost day by day. If this continues, the country’s farmers will face an extreme crisis in the future, as well as the impact of climate change will be difficult to deal with. So to overcome all these problems, SKS has taken initiative to introduce sustainable agricultural system.
